Description
Dalston War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in the churchyard of St Michael’s Church, next to the lychgate at the corner of Carlisle Road (B5299) and Church Lane in Dalston, Cumbria. It stands prominently at the entrance of the churchyard, facing the village. The memorial features a approximately 3.5-meter tall wheel-head granite cross on a square plinth with a tapering cap. The cross head, wheel, and shaft are intricately incised with strap work designs. The shaft bears a relief inscription commemorating the First World War, while the reverse of the cross head is also decorative. The reverse of the shaft includes inscriptions for the Second World War in leaded lettering. The inscription reads: "IN PROUD MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF DALSTON WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 (NAMES) LEST WE FORGET 1939 – 1945 (NAMES) MAY THEY REST IN PEACE."
