Description
The Cottage and Homeacres Cottage, part of the Cumbria College of Art and Design, is a reform school built in 1854 for George Head, Head of Rickerby, with later extensions added to the rear. The building features English garden wall bond brickwork without a plinth and has dressings made of calciferous sandstone. It has a steeply-pitched graduated greenslate roof with a skylight at the rear and original ridge brick chimney stacks. The structure is single storey and single depth, consisting of five bays with a two-bay extension on the right. The facade facing Brampton Road has projecting end gables, with the left gable featuring a canted bay window. The remaining windows are two-light stone mullioned with intricate patterned cast-iron tracery. The left side has a gable porch with a panelled door in a stone surround, while the rear includes doors and casement windows set in brick reveals. Inside, there are exposed hammer-beam trusses. This building was originally constructed as the Cumberland Reformatory for boys. Homeacres Cottage, located to the right, is included for its group value.
