Description
The pillbox at Brampton Road was built between 1940 and 1941. It is made of local red sandstone and red brick, with a concrete roof and resting shelf.
This pillbox has an irregular shape with three straight sides and a curvilinear south and east face. It is located on an elevated site in the corner of Barn Close garden, at the junction of Well Lane and Brampton Road, facing southeast towards the exit from Rickerby Park and the River Eden below. The structure has a flat roof that still features camouflage vegetation. The curvilinear southeast face is built from red sandstone blocks and includes a string course, matching the adjacent garden wall but standing taller. It has three square embrasures.
At the northeast corner, there is a tall entrance with a wooden boarded door, along with a stone threshold and lintel. This door leads to a concealed set of steps flanked by brick walls, which provide access to the rear entrance. The other sides of the pillbox are constructed from red brick in a variant English Garden Wall bond. The thick rear wall shows a tree-trunk scar and has an entrance at its western end, featuring an angled left jamb and a metal barred door. A protective brick blast wall extends northwards to the right side of the entrance.
Inside, the roof is made of shuttered concrete, and all walls are unpainted. The three embrasures appear as splayed horizontal slits. The southeast face, made of stone, is reinforced by an additional structure of nine courses of concrete sandbags, positioned directly below a pair of embrasures, indicating it also served as a resting shelf for small arms.
