Description

Little Bank is a house dating to circa 1813, built for Mrs Houseman. It is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, with lighter-coloured headers and a chamfered plinth featuring red sandstone dressings, some of which have been painted. The roof is green slate, with original brick chimney stacks at each end. The house is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front, featuring a double-depth plan and single-storey, three-bay wings on each side. The central entrance has a panelled door with a radial fanlight, set within a red sandstone surround. Sash windows with glazing bars are set within brick reveals, with stone sills and flat brick arches. The left wing has smaller windows, while the right wing incorporates 20th-century garage doors. The rear of the house offers a view of the River Eden. The interior remains unexamined. Contemporary newspaper accounts in the Carlisle Journal of 2 October 1813 describe the house as newly built, and it was shown on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map as Stanwix Cottage.
