Description

Tuethur is a house built in 1923 for Sir James Morton by Sir Robert Lorimer, with later extensions. It features painted wet-dashed walls on a brick plinth and a main hipped clay tiled roof with swept eaves. The house has mid brick chimney stacks, while the wing has a flat roof on two levels, concealed by a solid parapet. The main house is two storeys high with four bays, and there is a lower single-storey wing with two bays, forming a rough L-shape. It is located at the corner of St James Road and Empire Road.

At the internal angle of the L, there is a casement glazed door facing St James Road, accompanied by a casement window to the right and two above. The wing features a small "porthole" window and a large five-light window divided vertically by a segment-headed arcade. The symmetrical elevation facing Empire Road has two full-height, recessed, canted bays with hung tiles between the floors, and there is a similar bay at the rear. Most windows, except those in the wing, are small-paned casements.

While the interior has not been seen, it is well documented. The entrance hall and reception room are adorned with cherrywood panelling, and a first-floor room features similar panelling, an inglenook fireplace with cupboards and shelves, and a coved plaster ceiling decorated with ornate birds and animals. The oak staircase is decoratively carved in the Voysey manner. The house's name, Tuethur, derives from its use between Tuesday and Thursday, as the owner would return home on weekends. An undated plan is held at the Cumbria County Record Office.
