Description
No. 4 gasholder at Carlisle Gas Works is a gasholder built between 1878 and 1879 by engineer J Hepworth. It is constructed from cast and wrought iron, as well as concrete. The structure features a cylindrical rising vertical tank set in a concrete pit, which has had its iron-plate cladding removed, exposing the iron ribs. The guiding frame consists of three tiers of twelve plain round cast-iron columns topped with ball and spear finials, all held together by lattice girders and bracing. This gasholder was previously noted as the first use of concrete in the north of England.
