Description

The barn to the southeast of Tottergill Farmhouse is a range of farm outbuildings built in the mid and late 19th century, with some minor alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed from regularly coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring plain and crow-stepped gables and a slated roof. The building has an irregular 'U' shape, combining an earlier 'L' shaped range with a later linear range to the north.

The main range consists of 10 bays, standing two storeys high on the yard side and single storey at the rear, which is built into the bank. A central tower rises three storeys and includes dovecote openings within a crow-stepped gable, topped with a weathervane. At the base, there is a wide, double-shouldered arch leading to a cart bay, with a narrow two-light flush-mullioned window on each floor above. To the left, there are three openings, one of which is full height, each featuring a double-shouldered arch and housing a pig sty, complete with an enclosure wall, feed chute, and gates, along with an inner wall and entry. Above the tall opening is a hen coop. Further left, there are two stable doorways with a glazing bar sash window between them, and three additional sash windows above.

To the right of the tower, there are three doorways, one of which is blocked, along with narrow windows with flush surrounds between the doorways. The rear elevation includes a tall double doorway beneath a shallow gablet, providing cart access to the storage floor. Slit breathers are located to the right and left, and further to the right, there are four doorways and a chimney on the rear wall.

An attached range to the south is single storey with overlofts, featuring plain door openings on the north side wall and east and west gables, the latter allowing cart access to the loft. This barn is of special interest as a multi-purpose range of outbuildings that illustrates the development of integrated farmsteads within multi-phased sites, showcasing strong architectural details that characterize the later stages of development.
