Description

The Fitz is an early 19th-century house built for the Senhouse family. It is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar with a prominent eaves cornice, string course, blocking course, and angle pilasters set on a squared plinth. The roof is of graduated greenslate with ashlar chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high and has nine bays. The main entrance features double-panelled doors with an overlight and side lights, all contained within a fluted tetrastyle Doric porch. Sash windows with slender glazing bars are set within stone architraves, with the central two bays emphasized by full-height pilasters. The interior includes panelled shutters to each window. Historical records, including the Transactions Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society and Cumberland Families & Heraldry, note a weathered date stone from 1665 bearing the Senhouse coat-of-arms, which appears to have been incorporated into the later structure.
