Description
Broughton Moor War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, located in the churchyard of St Columba’s Church on Church Road in Broughton Moor, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned by the path leading to the church entrance and faces the main road. The memorial features a Latin cross made of grey granite, which has a wreath carved in relief at the center of the cross head. This cross stands on a tapering four-sided plinth that has a single-stepped square base beneath it. The plinth is inscribed with leaded lettering.
The inscription reads: "THIS STONE WAS PLACED HERE BY THE/ INHABITANTS OF BROUGHTON MOOR TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY/ OF THE UNDERMENTIONED 16 MEN OF THE/ VILLAGE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY DURING THE WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
