Description

The Weston Favell Memorial Cross is a memorial located in the northeast corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, which is a Grade II* listed building. It is accessed via steps from the intersection of High Street and Churchway. The memorial features a Celtic, wheel-headed cross made of limestone, standing approximately 6 meters high. The cross is adorned with well-carved, raised interlace ornament and is positioned on a sloping plinth, which itself rests on a square, stepped base. On this base are two stone flower troughs, and at the rear, there is a small flower urn.

The plinth bears inscriptions on its faces. The front face reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919" followed by 16 names, and "THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIVES UNTO THE DEATH." The side face states: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945" followed by 15 names, and "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."

The memorial is enclosed within a small square area defined by a low stone wall and is approached by steps from the street. The entrance features stone gate piers with ironstone caps, and the wrought iron gates are contemporary with the memorial.
