Description
This building, originally a house and now divided into two properties at 4 and 5 Market Place, likely began as a late 16th-century structure. It underwent significant alterations in the mid to late 17th century and had its front rebuilt in the early 18th century, with further changes and refurbishment occurring in the 19th and 20th centuries. Number 5 is faced with ashlar and has a first-floor band. Number 4 is stuccoed and features a projecting ground floor on the right and a covered doorhood on the left. Both have a tiled roof with two gabled dormers, and a brick central ridge stack with a stone base to the front. The building is two storeys and attics, with two flush sash windows featuring glazing bars on the first floor. Number 5 has marginal glazing bars to two ground-floor sash windows set within architrave surrounds with keystones. Number 4 has a shop window.
The interior of Number 5 includes fluted dado panelling, likely reset in the 19th or 20th century to a ground-floor room. This room also features an 18th-century corner cupboard and chimneypiece with 18th-century panelling to the sides, over, and to the sides of the fireplace. An earlier bressumer is visible behind the panelling. A small, open-well staircase dates from the mid to late 17th century and exhibits fine carved and moulded balusters. The roof is partly original but has undergone alterations, and there is an altered 18th-century rear wing.
