Description

The Briars comprises a mid-18th century house, originally a farmhouse, located on the north side of The Green in Blakesley. It consists of a three-unit plan with a coursed squared ironstone exterior and a plain-tile roof, featuring stone end and ridge stacks. It is two storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. A six-panel part-glazed door, approached by three moulded stone steps and set in a moulded wood surround, is located to the left of centre, sheltered by a porch supported on thin cast-iron columns. The ground and first floors have three-light casement windows. A three-light chamfered stone mullion window illuminates the cellar to the left of the door. Other external details include a plinth, chamfered stone eaves, stone-coped gables with kneelers, and three hipped roof dormers. An overhanging, canted bay is present at the right gable end, at ground floor level, overlooking the street. A lower, late 18th/early 19th century two-storey, two-window addition (number 5) adjoins the original house to the left. This addition features a six-panel door with a timber lintel and bracketed hood, a three-light casement window to the left, a small rectangular window to the far left, both with timber lintels, and two-light casements to the first floor. A blocked door is present on the first floor to the left. The interior of number 6 includes ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams, stone-flagged floors, an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, a dog-leg staircase with slender turned balusters leading to the attic, a fitted cupboard with shaped shelves, a stone cellar, and a collar truss roof.
