Description

The Poplars and attached stables is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, specifically dated 1653, with 19th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed of coursed squared ironstone and features a plain-tile roof with stone ridge and end stacks; the flue to the end stack has been rebuilt in red brick. The building is L-shaped, two storeys high with an attic, and has a three-window front range.

The central entrance consists of a six-panel part-glazed door set in a moulded wood surround, complete with an overlight and timber lintel. To the right of the door is a four-light hollow-chamfered stone mullion window with a hood mould, and to the left is a similar window. Above the door, there is a two-light window, while to the right on the first floor is a three-light window. The left side of the first floor features a four-light stone mullion and transom window with a hood mould. Additionally, there is a three-light chamfered stone mullion window in the gable of the rear left wing. The building is adorned with quoins, a chamfered stone plinth, and stone-coped gables with kneelers.

The attached stable wing to the right is single storey with a loft and also has a plain-tile roof. Inside, the farmhouse includes stop-chamfered spine beams, moulded stop-chamfered spine beams, and a large open fireplace in the kitchen with a moulded cambered bressumer. The year 1653 is inscribed on the mullion of a first-floor window. There are also two bolection-moulded timber chimneypieces in the upstairs rooms, one of which features an early 19th-century grate.
