Description
No 21 Market Place is a purpose-built bank and house dating from around 1900, featuring a significant amount of Georgian architectural detail. The building is two storeys high, with a roughcast first floor that has sandstone dressings. It has a gable end roof covered with graded slate, complete with copings and corniced ashlar chimneys.
The façade includes a moulded stone cornice and a parapet with coping. On the first floor, there are four windows that have shallow stone architrave surrounds and a cornice above, with plate glass sashes. The ground floor features a built-out ashlar sandstone bank front, which has one window on the left and two on the right, framed by fluted Renaissance Ionic pilasters on pedestals. There is a six-fielded panel door set within an architrave case, accompanied by a plain frieze and a moulded cornice that is broken forward in line with the pilasters, finishing with a crowning blocking course. This elevation contributes significantly to the overall character of the street.
