Description
The Town Hall, built in 1705-1706 by Scroop, Earl of Bridgewater (later the 1st Duke), cost £2,000. This two-storey building is made of ashlar stone and features rusticated quoins, a coved cornice, and a stone slate hipped roof. At the center of the roof is a clock tower topped with an ogee-capped cupola and a weathercock made of ornamental ironwork. The ground floor has five semi-circular-headed stone keystoned windows on the east and west sides. The first floor contains five 2-light mullioned and transomed wood windows set in moulded stone frames. The roof has four dormer windows on the east and west pitches, and a dormer window with a broken pediment on the north and south ends. A band runs along the first floor. Notably, John Wesley preached here in 1784.
