Description
The Brackley War Memorial is located in the south-west part of Brackley’s long Market Place, in a pedestrianized area in front of the Grade II*-listed Town Hall. Made of Clipsham limestone, the memorial features a three-stepped octagonal base topped by a roughly 6-meter high, three-tiered octagonal column, with each face slightly concave and crowned by a cross. The lowest tier lists the names of the theatres of war and significant battles. The middle tier records the 68 names of those who fell in the First World War. A principal dedication is inscribed on a plaque on the upper part of the middle tier, which reads: TO THE MEN OF/ BRACKLEY/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR KING/ AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919. Above this plaque, a decorative cartouche displays the arms of Brackley.
The memorial is enclosed by a recent low wall, built around 2006. On either side of the iron gates, plaques commemorate the 15 individuals lost in the Second World War. Additionally, the coping of the wall beside the gates bears the name of a serviceman who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.
