Description
The Nutshell is a cottage dating from the 17th century, with early 19th and 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble that has been whitewashed and features a timber frame. The roof is covered with artificial stone tiles, which were formerly thatched, and there are brick stacks. The cottage has two storeys and an attic, with two bays.
The central doorway has a wooden lintel and a four-panelled door, flanked by early 19th-century bay windows with wooden casements, all under a continuous roof of artificial stone slates. The first-floor windows are three-light iron and wood casements with wooden lintels. Inside, the first floor reveals exposed raised cruck construction, while the former rear wall is timber framed but is hidden externally by 19th and 20th-century additions.
