Description

Seawell Grounds Farmhouse and attached outbuildings is a farmhouse built around 1840, with alterations made during 20th-century renovations. The structure is made of coursed squared ironstone and features hipped slate roofs, stone ridges, and internal stacks. It is a two-storey building with a central block that has three windows, flanked by lower two-storey wings with two windows each. The central entrance consists of a double-leaf, part-glazed door with panelled reveals, set within a limestone porch supported by square columns that hold up a plain frieze and cornice. The farmhouse has 12-pane sash windows on both floors, which have flat-arched heads. Notable architectural details include a plinth, a storey band, and deep overhanging eaves. The porch was widened and rebuilt in the 20th century, and the right ground floor window of the left wing has been altered to create a garden door by lowering the sill. The symmetrical design is complemented by single-storey outbuilding wings, each featuring four blank round-headed arches with imposts. The left wing originally housed a cart-shed that is now used for garaging, while the right wing connects to an extensive range of altered farm buildings surrounding the rear yard. Inside, there are stone-flagged floors and some original stone chimneypieces. The square pillars of the porch were originally circular, unfluted Doric columns, which were modified during the 20th-century renovations. This farmhouse is one of several model farms built for the 4th Duke of Grafton between 1839 and 1844.
