Description

The barn located approximately 8 metres north of The Limes is a six-bay structure dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble with stone dressings and quoins, brick patching, and features a slate roof.

On the north wall, there is a large early 16th-century arch that has been blocked, which includes a four-centred head with quatrefoil spandrels and a square hood. To the left of this arch, there is a blocked window with a square hood and stone dressings of the same period. A portion of another mullion window remains to the right of the blocked doorway, and distinctive quoining can be seen at both the east and west gable ends.

Inside, the roof structure dates from the 19th century and consists of king post trusses with bolted collars and a central ridge plank. Two remaining chamfered tie beams feature lambs tongue stops. An off-centre stone surround of a possible fireplace is visible on the rear wall, along with the chamfered stone surrounds of both windows.

Historically, the barn is part of a steading, with other buildings that have undergone significant alterations. It was once subdivided between two farms and was partly used as a stable. It is believed that the door surround and mullion windows were reused from a priory. Currently, the barn is in a poor state of repair and is listed on the Buildings at Risk Register.

The barn is designated for its architectural and historic interest, retaining a significant amount of original 16th-century fabric and featuring notable architectural elements such as stone mullion windows and a central blocked door with quatrefoil spandrels.
