Description

Providence House is a house that likely dates from the mid 17th century to the early 19th century. It is built of squared coursed limestone with ironstone and has a 20th-century plain tile roof. The house features a three-unit plan with a cross wing and stands two storeys high with an attic. The front has a four-window range, with a gabled cross wing that projects forward to the left. The windows are 8-paned unhorned sash types, each with gauged stone heads and ashlar surrounds. The central door has been converted into a window. The gable parapets and kneelers are made of ashlar, and there are truncated ashlar stacks at the ridge and end. The gable elevations on the left and right have some casement windows under wooden lintels. There is a 20th-century porch on the left gable. At the rear, there is a lean-to on the right and a three-light stone mullion window on the ground floor to the left. The first floor has two leaded casements under wooden lintels. Inside, the room to the right of the main front features 17th-century moulded spine beams and rafters, along with a large 16th-century fireplace, which has likely been reset. The fireplace has a four-centred arch head with roll moulding and medical symbols in the spandrels. There is a partially legible inscription on the fireplace that reads, "Now it is written for us to believe that ..... God save King Edward VI of that name." The kitchen contains stop-chamfered beams.
