Description
Nos. 1 to 14 Mill Road form a continuous row of one-storey rubble-built cottages with steep stone slate roofs that step down after every two or three cottages. Each cottage has one or two hipped dormers, with some being double-fronted. The cottages have very plain, low doorways and simple casement windows. Several retain old stone chimney stacks; some are brick or have been repaired with brick. No. 4 is set at a right angle to the road behind No. 5, with a passageway through No. 3, and is two storeys high with a gable that rises above the roof of No. 5. At least one mullioned window survives. Nos. 3 and 5 each have a gabled dormer – the only exceptions along the row – and No. 5 features a moulded dripstone above a small window to the left of the doorway. The cottages likely date from the earlier 17th century and appear to be in sound structural condition. As the first substantial buildings encountered when approaching Oundle from the south (via Thrapston Road), they possess greater significance due to their character, overall form, and group effect. Nos. 1 to 14 form a group.
