Description
The walls, gatepiers, and attached gates located approximately 40 meters east of the east front of Apethorpe Palace were built in the early 20th century by Sir Reginald Blomfield for Leonard Brassey, who later became Baron Brassey. The structure features limestone ashlar gatepiers and a balustrade on the east side, with squared coursed limestone walls to the north and south. There are wrought iron gates at the center of the south and east sides, although the gates on the north side are now missing. The gatepiers are topped with obelisks adorned with swags and ball finials, and similar piers are found at the corners. The open balustrade has 12 subdivisions on the east side. Originally, this forecourt served as the gravel garden of the early 18th century. The walls, gatepiers, and attached gates are part of the forecourt layout for Apethorpe Palace, which is adjacent to them, along with a wall and gatepier connected to the northeast corner of the east front of Apethorpe Palace.
