Description

The stables and attached walls, located approximately 20 meters north of Lilford Hall, were likely built in the early to mid-18th century for the Powys family and modified in the mid to late 19th century. Constructed from limestone ashlar with stone slate roofs, the building has a U-shaped plan and stands two stories tall. The courtyard elevation features a five-window range, with the central three bays flanked by wings that project forward, each with a two-window range. A central carriage arch with a keyblock is present, and the casement windows, which have glazing bars and gauged stone heads, decrease in size on the first floor. The central range is topped with a triangular pediment, and there is a moulded cornice, a plain parapet, and a hipped roof with ashlar ridge stacks. An octagonal wooden cupola with arched openings, a cornice dome, and a weathervane sits atop the building. The left and right elevations mirror the five-window range of the courtyard side, with the left elevation featuring stone mullion and transom windows with segmental heads, likely remodeled in the 19th century. The rear elevation has seven bays, with a triple arcade at the center and flanking arches that serve as entrances to the coach-houses, topped with a pediment. A 19th-century quadrant wall attached to the left of the courtyard elevation connects to the north-west wing of Lilford Hall, with additional 19th-century walls on the right. The interior mainly dates from the 19th and 20th centuries. These stables form a pair with another set of stables and attached walls located approximately 20 meters north-east of Lilford Hall.
