Description
Islip Millhouse and the attached mill buildings are a watermill and house that date from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the early and late 19th century. The structure is built of squared coursed limestone and brick, topped with pantile and slate roofs. The mill and house form an L-shaped plan and rise to two storeys with an attic and loft.
The main front of the mill features a four-window range of irregularly spaced casement windows set beneath wooden lintels. There is a plank door to the right and a similar door on the first floor, both also under wooden lintels. The left corner of the mill is chamfered and includes a casement window under a wooden lintel. The eaves were raised in brickwork during the early 19th century. A weatherboarded projecting hoist is located at loft level to the right of centre. The mill race runs centrally beneath the building.
The millhouse is attached at a right angle to the right side of the mill. It consists of two bays, with a one-window range of early 19th-century sash windows featuring glazing bars, also under wooden lintels. To the left bay, there is a projecting wing from the late 19th or early 20th century that has been rendered. The house has three flat-topped dormers and a brick stack at the end. Additionally, there is a mid-19th-century two-storey lean-to attached to the left, situated between the gable ends of the house and the mill, which includes a 19th-century part-glazed door and wooden porch. The interior has not been inspected.
