Description

The stables and attached walls, located approximately 20 metres northeast of Lilford Hall, were likely built in the early to mid-18th century for the Powys family and modified in the mid to late 19th century. Constructed from limestone ashlar with stone slate roofs, the building has a U-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall. The elevation facing the courtyard features a five-window range, with the central three bays flanked by wings that project forward, each with a two-window range at the ends. A central carriage arch with a keyblock is present, along with casement windows that have glazing bars and gauged stone heads, which reduce in size at the first floor. The central range is topped with a triangular pediment, a moulded cornice, a plain parapet, and a hipped roof. An octagonal wooden cupola with arched openings, a cornice dome, and a weathervane sits at the centre. The left and right elevations also have similar five-window ranges, with the right elevation featuring stone mullion and transom windows with segmental heads, likely remodelled in the 19th century. The rear elevation consists of seven bays, with a triple arcade at the centre flanked by arches that lead to the coach-house, each with panelled doors and a pediment above. This elevation may have originally included a projecting glazed canopy from the 19th century. Attached walls on either side of the courtyard elevation date from the 19th century, with the walls on the right linked by arches to the southeast wing of Lilford Hall. The stables form a pair with another set of stables and attached walls located approximately 20 metres north of Lilford Hall.
