Description
The main block of the Secondary Modern School for Girls was built in 1893 in an original variant of the Carolean style by J A Gotch. It features a symmetrical front made of red brick with stone dressings and has hipped and gabled machine tiled roofs. The building is primarily one storey, but the centre rises to two storeys and includes a campanile tower with arched panels at the top stage, topped by a tall roof with a segmental pediment at the front. The centre is recessed, with gables at the centres of the wings. The window arrangement consists of 4:5:4, with casements and sashes set under flat and segmental arches that have keystones. The central doorway is adorned with a segmental pediment supported by long carved consoles. The north elevation features a projecting centre with a window arrangement of 5:12:7.
