Description

1 Silver Street is a three-storey townhouse dating back to approximately 1778, as suggested by a stone inscribed with “1778” and “J^M” on the north façade. The building is roughly rectangular and faces west onto Silver Street.

The front (western) façade is of red brick, with details in stucco and stone, arranged symmetrically in three bays. A plain plat band separates the first and second floors of both front and north elevations. Painted stone pilasters with prominent stone cornices mark each corner of the building, and a stone cornice runs above the upper windows below the roofline. The first floor features two 19th-century oriel bays on the north and south sides, and a central two-over-two sash window with a moulded surround and projecting keystone. The second floor has three two-over-two sash windows, similarly detailed.

The north façade is brick, currently painted, with mouldings that echo those on the western façade. Stone pilasters are present at the east and west corners. The north gable has a chimney of dressed limestone.

The southern façade is largely hidden by adjacent buildings and render, although the gable end is visible. This gable is constructed of ironstone rubble, with limestone quoins visible. A late 20th-century shopfront of plate glass occupies the ground floor and lacks historic features. The gabled ends are of painted brick with ironstone rubble in the gables, with the north gable painted over and the south gable covered with concrete render. The roof is pitched with gables to the north and south, covered with slate. The chimneys are of limestone.
