Description

5 and 7 High Street is a three-storey building dating from the 19th century, constructed of brick with a stuccoed front façade. The building has a roughly square plan and faces east onto High Street.

The exterior features a pitched slate roof and is arranged in two bays on the principal eastern elevation. On the first floor, the northern window is a timber oriel window with a two-over-two sash, while the southern window is also a two-over-two sash. Between these windows is a three-faced clock that projects from the façade on a metal bracket. The second-floor windows are both two-over-two sashes. The façade includes rendered quoins, likely made of stucco. The shopfront has timber reeded pilasters that mimic a historic design, and the year 1909 marked on the shopfront refers to the founding date of AA Thornton at separate premises on Market Street.

The rear elevation consists of a dressed limestone wall, showing scars from previous openings that have been filled. To the south, there is a small redbrick monopitch extension from the 19th century.

Inside, some historic features remain in the upper rooms, including reed and plaster ceilings and a plank door that likely dates to the early 19th century.
