Description

Latham’s Hospital is a building founded in 1611, with significant additions and rebuilding in the 1830s. It is of an E-shaped plan and constructed of coursed rubble, with stone slate roofs and flat verges to the gables, each topped with a finial. The long wing, running parallel to the road, and the north-facing shorter wing appear largely original. The remaining wings and the walls with elaborate gateways connecting the road ends to the gables were added or rebuilt in 1830, as evidenced by the date inscribed above one of the doorways. The windows are stone mullioned, generally featuring three lights on the ground floor and two lights on the first floor. The building includes stone chimneys with double, triple, and quadruple flues. The listed buildings on the east side of North Street form a group.
