Description
The Wilby War Memorial is located in the south-east corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade II* listed building. The memorial features a stone cross approximately 4.5 meters tall, with a Latin head atop a tapering square-sectioned shaft. This shaft is mounted on an octagonal plinth that stands on a three-stepped octagonal base.
Inscribed around the upper part of the plinth are the words: "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE/ THE MEN OF WILBY WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919." The names of the fallen soldiers are recorded on the panels of the plinth. Additionally, a small inscription at the base of the plinth reads: "GREATER LOVE HATH/ NO MAN THAN THIS THAT/ HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS." The names of those who died in the Second World War, along with the date range 1939–1945, have been added to the rear of the plinth.
