Description

Berrystead is a significant house built around 1700, located set back from North Street with a low walled forecourt. This impressive structure features two storeys, attics, and a semi-basement, constructed of ashlar stone with a double gabled stone slate roof. It has prominent stone chimney stacks with triple flues on each gable and one off-centre on the forward ridge. The building showcases chamfered quoins and a dentilled eaves cornice.

There are seven windows arranged in a pattern of 2, 3, and 2, with a slight central projection and a band between the storeys. The house has three dormers with shallow curved tops. The ground floor and first-floor windows are early sash types with heavy glazing bars, except for three ground floor windows located to the right of centre, all set in wooden cases with plain wide architraves featuring keystones.

The central entrance is approached by a flight of five stone steps with wrought iron rails, leading to a doorway with a moulded architrave and a triangular pediment supported by two consoles, with a panelled door. The basement contains six 2-light stone mullioned windows. The interior and garden front are noted to be of good quality.

All the listed buildings on the east side of North Street form a group.
