Description

The Great Hall and wall of Oundle School, dated 1907 and designed by Arthur Blomfield, is a building in the Perpendicular style. It is constructed of coursed stone with stone dressings and features a stone slate roof. The structure has two storeys and includes two wings, each with two-storey sections that have mullion and transom windows of six lights beneath gables adorned with finials. Rectangular dripmoulds extend as strings, which continue over the cills. The ground floor has four windows of four lights, arranged in pairs with mullions and transoms.

The building has a plinth and angle buttresses at the quoins. There are two-storey canted porches at the angles, topped with crenellated parapets. Above a four-centred doorway with carved spandrels, there is a window of four lights and a three-light rectangular fanlight, along with side lights. The taller central section projects forward and features a moulded gable end with an elaborate double chimney stack.

Two turrets at the angles have crenellated parapets and gargoyle waterspouts at the cornice. The top of the building includes a lantern with single lancet lights on each face and irregular arrow slits. A central figure of Laxton is set in a niche beneath a carved canopy, and there is a large perpendicular window below an ornamented dripmould. Strings are present at the cill and between the storeys, with blank carved arcades below and basement lights. A foundation plaque is also included.

The property features a low stone wall with two sets of gate piers topped with iron finials, which do not have lamps, and iron gates. The design is similar to that of the Blain Building (The Cloisters). All the listed buildings in New Street form a group.
