Description
This is a row of four houses, originally eight cottages, dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century and later. They were built as estate housing for the Marquess of Buckingham. The construction is timber-framed with brick infill, some areas whitewashed, and a rubble stone plinth. The western side of the row has been rebuilt in whitewashed brick. The roofs are tiled on the east side and slate on the west, with a central brick chimney for each house. The houses are staggered up a slight hill. Each house has two storeys and four small bays. The western side features paired leaded casement windows, with segmental heads over the ground-floor windows. Originally, each cottage had a board door with a gabled timber and rendered porch, approximately dating to 1870, though only four of these original porches remain, with the others having been altered in the 20th century. Number 2 has a projecting 20th-century conservatory. The eastern side has 20th-century wooden casements and doors.
