Description

The walls surrounding the garden to the south of Wotton House, along with a garden pavilion and a wall to the southwest, date from the early 18th century and were altered and repaired in the 20th century. These walls are part of a formal garden designed by George London, who was a Royal Gardener. Constructed of red brick, the walls feature stone coping and some ball finials. There is a low wall along the eastern side, while the western wall has been modified with 20th-century steps. The pavilion at the southern end has been heavily restored around 1980, with brick walls that include 20th-century ornamental plaster panels on the interior. The front features Ionic stone piers, and the 20th-century lead roof is designed as a depressed arch, replicating the former roof with slight changes in proportions. The short flanking walls to the stone piers have panelled sides, moulded cornices, and carved scrolls on the side pilasters and walls. The wall to the southwest includes a wrought iron gate that has replaced an early 18th-century gate that was previously listed but is now removed. This site was illustrated in Country Life in 1904 on pages 126-135.
