Description

Speen Church, a Baptist church, has its earliest part documented from 1802, with a vestry added to the right in 1817 and an extension to the rear in 1834. A hall was added to the left in the 1970s. The original structure is built of flint with dentil brick eaves and an old tiled roof, hipped to the left. It is two storeys high and consists of two bays. The ground floor features semi-circular arched windows with barred wooden casements and flint arches, while the upper floor has three-light barred wooden casements. There is a round window in the center above a flush-panelled door, which has a semi-circular flint arch and a blind tympanum. The vestry to the right is marked with "TG 1817" on a brick above the door and includes other dated and initialled bricks in the door jambs. It is made of flint with brick dressings, has a flush-panelled door, and a paired barred wooden casement above. A similar narrow wing at the rear is dated "18 TA 34" on a stone tablet and features two arched windows and two paired casements. The single-storey hall has a flat roof, a tiled parapet, and barred wooden casements. Inside, there is a gallery from around 1830 to 1840 that runs around three sides, supported by simple stick balustrades on wooden column shafts. The pulpit, located in the center of the north wall, has a similar balustrade. There are rows of hat pegs along the west wall and removable shutters in the vestry.
