Description

The Old Post Office is a house, with a former shop component, dating from the mid-18th century, extended in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The original two bays on the right are constructed of chequer brick, with a chamfered plinth and a first-floor band course. The roof is tiled, and features rebuilt brick chimneys, originally external, with a flint lobby to the front of the left-hand chimney. The house is one storey and has an attic. Windows are 3-light, barred wooden casements; those on the ground floor have segmental heads, while those in the attic are within gabled eaves-line dormers. There are board doors in the centre and on the left. To the left is a later, projecting cross wing built of flint, Denner Hill rubble and brick, with some timbering and a hipped tile roof. This wing has a 3-light barred wooden casement window on the first floor, and a 19th-century shop front below, containing a central half-glazed door, a flat wooden hood and flanking barred windows with 5x3 panes each. Behind the house, one bay was originally a bakery. Store rooms, built in a similar style, were added to the left, with an upper room containing a hayloft door. There is a covered entry and a weatherboard stable bay to the far left. Inside, a single, old chamfered doorway remains, featuring moulded stops.
