Description

The Green Man Public House is an early 19th-century building located at 32 Market Square. It is three storeys tall with a cellar, featuring a stucco exterior and a rusticated ground floor. A string course runs at the first floor level. The upper two floors are divided into two sections by three slightly projecting pilasters that have incised panels. The building has a moulded cornice and a blocking course, with the bed mould of the cornice and the blocking course breaking forward over the pilasters.

On the second floor, there are two windows, although the glazing bars have been altered. The first floor has two half-glazed French casement windows, with a flush panel at the bottom of the door and altered glazing above. These windows open onto a balcony that spans the entire front, featuring a cast iron balustrade with a honeysuckle pattern.

To the left on the ground floor, there is an arched yard entrance, which now serves as the entrance to the Repertory Theatre located behind the building. This entrance features a three-centre arch supported by two slender engaged Doric columns, which hold up an inner concentric arch. The central entrance is a narrow arched recess with steps leading up to it. The door has six flush reeded panels, a small plain rectangular fanlight, and a semi-circular panel above, with radiating voussoirs.

To the right, there is a shallow segmental bay window with three lights, where the glazing bars have also been altered. This bay window is flanked by panelled pilasters that support a small entablature above. Below the bay window is a segmental-headed cellar entrance, which features radiating voussoirs.

The Green Man Public House is part of a group with Nos 32 to 36 (even).
