Description
Barclay's Bank is an early 18th-century building located at 34 Market Square. It is two storeys tall with an attic and constructed of red brick, featuring a projecting stone plinth that is stuccoed. The front of the building is divided into seven bays by eight shallow brick pilasters, each with the bed mould of the cornice curved around them. It has a heavy moulded eaves cornice and an old tiled roof.
There are three wood pedimented dormer windows symmetrically arranged in the roof, with the central one featuring a curved pediment. On the first floor, there are six windows set in plain reveals, along with a central recessed brick panel that has a cut brick semi-circular arch within a rectangle, supported by moulded brick brackets at the springing and a moulded key. The ground floor contains five windows and two doorways. The central doorcase has been renewed and features a wide moulded architrave with a plain surround, a cornice, and a pediment, along with a modern oak door. The building is set back from the pavement and previously had railings that were removed during the last war. Nos 32 to 36 (even) form a group with this building.
