Description
No 36 Market Square is an 18th-century building that has been altered in the 19th century. It stands three storeys tall and is finished in stucco with a raised plinth and a string course at the first-floor cill level. The building features a single bay front with a central angular bay. At the outer angles of the bay, there are slightly projecting Doric pilasters, with their caps aligning with the head of the second-floor window. The mouldings of these caps extend to the corners of the building, forming a string course. The building has a modified entablature and a blocking course supported by deep carved, painted acanthus brackets, which also feature a small moulded string. Each of the upper floors has a central three-light sash window; the second floor has a moulded cill, while the first floor has a small entablature between the pilasters. The ground floor window has been altered in the 20th century but was originally similar in style. Nos 32 to 36 Market Square form a group.
