Description
19 and 21 Castle Street are a pair of buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are two storeys and have an attic. Number 19 has a projecting plinth and a rubber brick string course at first-floor level, with vitreous brick walls and red brick dressings. It features an early 19th-century sash window on the first floor, and modern windows on the ground floor. A six-panel door is set within a doorcase of reeded pilasters and a flat moulded hood, although the door itself is modern. The roof was altered to a Mansard style, probably in the early 19th century, and includes a box casement dormer. Number 21 is of a similar design, with two windows on the first floor, including a triple-light mullioned and transomed casement, and one blocked window. The ground floor has a modern window and a modern door with a fanlight. Some timber framework is visible at the rear of the building. Both buildings contribute to a visually cohesive appearance. Number 21 has a heavy wood eaves cornice with modillions. The buildings form a group with numbers 23 and 25.
