Description
The Grammar School, built in 1914, is a notable example of Queen Anne style architecture. It features a robust design constructed of purple brick with red dressings and a Westmorland slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has an E-plan layout with slightly projecting inner wings. The windows, excluding the outer wings, are arranged in a pattern of 3:6:5:6:3, with flush sashes set under flat arches and featuring glazing bars. The first floor has three central Venetian windows above round-headed windows and the main doorway. The façade is enhanced by wide pilasters supporting a pediment, which is adorned with modillions along the cornice. At the roof ridge, there is a wooden clock turret topped with a lead cupola and a ball finial. The architect of this structure is A S Vernon.
