Description
Castle Hill House, also known as the Borough Museum, dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The front block was remodeled around 1778, resulting in a symmetrical south elevation with three bays. The building was later extended on the east by one bay, designed to match the original. It is constructed of flint rubble, featuring pilasters at the corners and between the bays. The roof is hipped and covered with Welsh slate, complete with a wide eaves cornice. The house has two storeys and attics, with four sash windows set in reveals. The central door on the left side is glazed and has two folds, topped by a traceried elliptical fanlight within a deeply recessed segmentally arched opening, surrounded by slim panelled Doric pilasters. A date panel on the west side of the elevation indicates the year 1778. At the back, there is an earlier 18th-century wing that is roughcast and has an old tiled roof.
