Description

Thurlby is a cottage with an attached outbuilding, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with earlier medieval origins and 20th-century alterations. The building is timber-framed, re-fronted in painted brick, and features a thatched roof with brick stacks at the ends and ridge. Originally a cruck-framed open hall house, it now has a three-unit plan and is one storey with an attic, comprising a three-window range. A 20th-century door is located to the right of the center, flanked by canted bay windows with wooden lintels. There is a three-light leaded casement window on the ground floor at the far left, and two two-light leaded casements in eyebrow dormers in the attic. The full-height outbuilding to the far left shares the same roof as the cottage, has a hip to the left end, and features a pair of double-leaf plank doors with a wooden lintel. The left end of the cottage displays exposed timber-framing. To the right, there is a 20th-century single-storey extension that houses a shop and post office, which is not of special architectural interest.

Inside, the ground floor features ogee stop-chamfered spine beams, some original stop-chamfered joists, and an open fireplace with a bressumer. A full cruck truss, likely from the original two-bay open hall, is visible, with an arch-braced collar at the first-floor level. The arch braces form a round arch, and there is a saddle at the apex. One tier of wind-braced purlins is also visible. The outbuilding has a two-bay open roof with tie beams and collars to the principal trusses, irregular rafters made from branches, one tier of purlins, and a ridge piece.
