Description

Britwell House is an 18th-century house that was significantly enlarged in the 19th century on three sides. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has plain tile roofs. The entrance front reveals one end of the original 18th-century house, which is two storeys high and features a 19th-century neo-Jacobean porch and two sash windows above. The roof is hipped. To the right, there is a three-storey wing built around 1870, consisting of four bays separated by brick buttresses, with Gothic-style paired upper floor windows divided by colonettes. Attached to this wing is another addition from around 1900, which has two tall storeys with tripartite windows and a matching ornamental panel made of Portland stone, along with an oval window.

The garden front displays at least two different construction dates; the left side has a foundation stone laid by Lady Grenville in 1864, while the right side features a date plaque from 1895. Both sides have Jacobean-style gables. At the west end of the house, there is a slim tower topped with a pyramid roof. Attached to the right end of the house is a notable chapel built in 1935 by Ninian Comper for the House of Prayer, which occupied the house until 1982. This chapel is made of purple brick with stone dressings, combining classical forms, pedimental gables, and moulded eaves with late Gothic details in the tracery. The interior is finished in white plaster, blending classical and Gothic styles, and includes a fine baldacchino. Historically, Britwell House belonged to the Earl of Orrery from 1713 to 1734 and was later owned by the Christie-Miller family throughout the 19th century.
