Description
These are terraced cottages that were formerly workers' housing, built in 1920 by Fred Rowntree for the Quaker Trust. The cottages feature brick walls, tile roofs, and wooden windows, including both sashes and casements, along with doors.
The plan consists of five attached cottages, with Nos. 4 and 8 projecting at the east and west ends, creating an overall U-shaped layout. The facades of Nos. 5, 6, and 7 have pitched roofs and one storey plus an attic, with each cottage displaying projecting attic gables and a central window on the first floor. Nos. 4 and 8 have two-storey gable roofs that are hipped at the front, and there are prominent chimneys. The windows are wood flush-framed, multi-paned sashes, and casements, complemented by plank exterior doors.
The interior has not been inspected but is believed to be plain, as these were originally workers' cottages. The cottages directly face the 1919 Village Green, which is at the heart of the village of Jordans.
The construction of Jordans village began in 1919 as a planned community for Quakers, based on designs by Fred Rowntree from 1916. This terrace is part of a group with other surviving terraces around the Village Green, intended for workers at Jordans Village Industries. The terrace is listed for its contribution to the group value of the historically significant Jordans village and as a range of mostly unaltered and well-designed workers' housing.
