Description

53 and 54, 56 High Street is a group of 18th-century buildings located in West Wycombe. The buildings are constructed of colour-washed brick with old tiled roofs and stand two storeys tall.

On the ground floor, No 53 features a six-panelled door, a three-light wooden mullioned casement, and a double-hung sash window. No 56 has a six flush-panelled door, a canted wooden oriel window supported by brackets, and a left-hand passageway, all beneath a cornice hood. The first floor of both buildings includes two double-hung sash windows set in surrounds, with a band that is interrupted by the windows. All windows have glazing bars.

No 54, which incorporates No 55, is located at the back and is also an 18th-century structure made of flint rubble with red brick dressings, quoins, and flush sill bands, topped with an old tiled roof. It has two storeys, two casements, and ground floor windows that feature cambered relieving arches. There is a six-panelled door, but the doorway on the north side is now blocked up.

These buildings, along with Nos 35 to 37, The Church Loft, Nos 45 to 54, Nos 56 to 59, Steps House, The Plough Inn, The Apple Orchard, The Old Smithy, West Wycombe Estate Office, Rose Cottage, and Ness Cottage, form a cohesive group.
