Description
Aylesbury St Mary’s War Memorial is situated in the churchyard, south of the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary and next to the Grade II-listed South Gateway to St Mary’s Churchyard. It is surrounded by several other listed buildings. The memorial stands approximately 6 meters tall and is designed as an elaborate Calvary cross.
The cross-head features a hooded crucifixion scene, with figures of Mary and John on either side of the cross. These figures are carved in the round and rest on bracketed pedestals at the top of the slender, octagonal cross shaft. The shaft rises from a square pedestal that has an octagonal moulded cap and shoulders that are cut back at the corners. The pedestal is set on a three-stepped base.
On the south face of the pedestal, the dedication is carved in relief. It reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF AYLESBURY WHO DID THEIR DUTY EVEN UNTO DEATH IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 TRUE LOVE BY LIFE TRUE LOVE BY DEATH IS TRIED LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND WE FOR ENGLAND DIED REQUIESCAT IN PACE."
