Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in St Mary's Square. The church, primarily built in the 13th century, incorporates elements from a Saxon church and underwent extensive restoration between 1804 and 1809. It features a cruciform plan, with a Saxon crypt located beneath the Lady Chapel and a Norman font. Inside, there is a notable 16th-century monument to Lady Lee in the North Transept, along with many significant tombs in the churchyard. The church is set in an area that resembles a small-scale Cathedral Close, surrounded by a variety of housing, including the Museum and Prebendal House, which contribute to the architectural interest of the setting. The listed buildings in St Mary's Square, along with No 1 St Mary's Row and No 6 Pebble Lane, form a cohesive group.
