Description

Greenend House is a late 18th-century building located on Rickford's Hill. It is two storeys high and constructed of brick that is stuccoed and painted. The house features full-height angle pilasters leading up to a frieze, which has a boldly reeded band adorned with 21 equally spaced lion head masks on square panels. The wide flat eaves sit just above the frieze, and the roof is hipped and covered with slate.

On the first floor, there are seven windows set in architrave frames. The central window is arched and surrounded by pilasters, a broken moulded entablature, and an architrave around the head of the arch, reflecting a modified Palladian style. This window also has a balustraded plinth. The ground floor has six grouped windows located beneath the first-floor windows, flanking a central door, all under a continuous cornice hood supported by carved console brackets.

The central door is recessed within a rusticated stucco surround, featuring a voussoir head and a scroll keystone, and is sheltered by a Doric porch supported by two wall pilasters and two columns. The porch includes an entablature with a triglyph frieze and a modillioned cornice. The back elevation is made of vitreous and red brick. Inside, the house retains much of its original character, including panelled oak doors. Greenend House is part of a group with Nos 2 to 12 (even).
