Description
The premises occupied by Midland Bank, located on Cornmarket, date from the 18th century and have been slightly altered, particularly at the ground floor, which features modern refronting with rusticated ashlar and contemporary doors and windows that generally maintain the character of the building. The upper storeys are constructed of red and grey chequer brickwork, accented with chamfered red brick quoins. The roof is tiled and features a wooden moulded and modillioned cornice, along with a small casement box dormer. Each floor has three windows, with the central window blocked; the outer windows are sash types set in reveals with glazing bars. The first floor is adorned with moulded brick cornice heads above flat arches, and there is a central brick moulded eared architrave with a pulvinated frieze, dentil cornice, and pediment. There is also a modern back wing that is similar in style. This building, along with Nos 1 to 5, The Little Market House, Guildhall, and The Falcon Hotel, forms a group of significant structures.
